Debi Nicolle Johnson was born on March 13, 1958, in Torrance, California. She grew up in a working-class family, with her father working as a mason's helper, two brothers becoming police officers, and another brother serving as a Drill Sergeant in the Marine Corps. Before her modeling career, she worked as a flight attendant and in children's clothing sales.
At age 26, Debi participated in the Playboy Playmate search for the magazine's 30th anniversary. She became Playmate of the Month in October 1984, appearing in numerous Playboy videos and special editions. Known for her brown curls, 35-21-34 figure, and natural presence, she became a notable figure of the 1980s Playboy era. During a photo shoot in New York, a 14-year-old boy remarked to her, "You are a real woman. The rest are imitations."
