Jo-Issa Rae Diop (born January 12, 1985), known professionally as Issa Rae, is an American actress, writer, and producer. She gained attention for her YouTube web series Awkward Black Girl and has developed her channel since 2011, featuring content created by people of color.
Rae is the co-creator, co-writer, and star of the HBO series Insecure (2016–present), earning multiple Golden Globe and Primetime Emmy nominations. Her 2015 memoir, The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl, was a New York Times best-seller. In 2018, she was listed in Time 100 most influential people. Rae has appeared in films such as The Hate U Give (2018), Little (2019), The Photograph (2020), and The Lovebirds (2020), and will voice Jessica Drew / Spider-Woman in the Spider-Verse sequel (2022).
