Elizabeth Woolridge Grant (born June 21, 1985), known as Lana Del Rey, is an American singer, songwriter, and model from New York. She began her music career in 2005 and gained widespread attention in 2011 with the viral music video for her single "Video Games." Her major-label debut, Born to Die, peaked at number two on the U.S. charts and was the fifth best-selling album of 2012. A remix of its single "Summertime Sadness" reached number six in the U.S., and the Paradise EP followed in November 2012, earning her a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Vocal Album. Three tracks from the EP appeared in her short film Tropico, released in December 2013.
Del Rey's third studio album, Ultraviolence, released in 2014, became her first number-one album in the United States and received positive reviews. In 2015, after a North American tour with Courtney Love and Grimes, she released her fourth studio album, Honeymoon, which had the fourth highest first-week sales by a female artist that year. As of 2015, she was the most streamed female artist on Spotify in the U.S. and the fourth worldwide. Her music is noted for its cinematic style, themes of tragic romance and melancholia, and references to 1950s and 1960s American pop culture.
