Born and raised in Denver, Colorado, Janssen has strong ties to the state. She attended Heritage High School in Littleton, Colorado. Janssen began her participation in beauty pageants in 2014, competing in Miss Colorado USA and Miss Colorado Teen USA. Although she did not place in the top ranks, she won the non-finalist interview award, demonstrating her communication skills.
She continued competing, placing fourth in Miss Colorado USA 2015 and again in 2016. In 2017, on her fourth attempt, she was crowned Miss Colorado USA on October 23, 2016, at the Union Colony Civic Center in Greeley, Colorado. Janssen represented Colorado in Miss USA 2017 but did not place in the competition.
