Sahra Wagenknecht, born on July 16, 1969, in Jena, is a German economist, publicist, and politician (PDS, The Left). Since the early 1990s, she has held key positions in various executive committees of the PDS.
After the 2007 merger of the PDS with the SPD offshoot WASG, she expanded her influence in the successor party The Left. Known for her communist stance for a long time, Wagenknecht was a leading figure of the party's left wing. From 2010 to 2014, she served as one of the deputy party leaders. She was a member of the European Parliament from 2004 to 2009 representing the PDS and The Left. Since September 2009, she has been a member of the German Bundestag, and from 2011 she was deputy parliamentary group leader of The Left. On October 13, 2015, she and Dietmar Bartsch replaced Gregor Gysi as parliamentary group leaders, making her the opposition leader in the 18th Bundestag.
