Samantha Jane Morton (born 13 May 1977) is an English actress and director known for her work in independent productions with dark themes. She has received a British Academy Television Award, a British Independent Film Award, a Golden Globe Award, and nominations for two Academy Awards, a Primetime Emmy Award, and a British Academy Film Award.
Morton began her career in British television in 1991 and transitioned to film with lead roles in Emma (1996), Jane Eyre (1997), and Under the Skin (1997). She received critical acclaim for Sweet and Lowdown (1999), earning Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations. She won the BIFA Award for Best Actress for Morvern Callar (2002) and received a second Academy Award nomination for In America (2003). Her roles include appearances in Minority Report (2002), Longford (2006), Control (2007), and Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007). Morton won a Golden Globe for Longford and made her directorial debut with The Unloved (2009), which won a BAFTA Television Award. She has appeared in films such as The Messenger (2009), John Carter (2012), Decoding Annie Parker (2013), and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016), and starred in television series including The Last Panthers (2015), Rillington Place (2016), Harlots (2017–2019), and The Walking Dead (2019–2020).
