Katherine Matilda "Tilda" Swinton (born 5 November 1960) is a Scottish actress, performance artist, model, and fashion muse known for arthouse, independent, and mainstream films. She began her film career with Derek Jarman's Caravaggio in 1985 and won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival in 1991 for her role as Isabella of France in Edward II. She starred in Orlando (1992), earning a European Film Award nomination, and was nominated for a Golden Globe in 2001 for The Deep End.
Swinton appeared in Vanilla Sky (2001), Adaptation (2002), Julia (2008), I Am Love (2009), and We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011). She played the White Witch in the Chronicles of Narnia series and won the Academy Award and BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress for Michael Clayton (2007). Other films include The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008), Burn After Reading (2008), Moonrise Kingdom (2012), Snowpiercer (2013), The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014), Trainwreck (2015), and A Bigger Splash (2015). She will appear as the Ancient One in the upcoming Marvel film Doctor Strange. Swinton received the Richard Harris Award from the British Independent Film Awards in 2005 and a special tribute from the Museum of Modern Art in 2013.
