Bernadette Peters (born Bernadette Lazzara; February 28, 1948) is an American actress, singer, and children's book author. Her career spans five decades, during which she has appeared in musical theatre, films, television, solo concerts, and recordings. She has received seven Tony Award nominations, winning two plus an honorary award, and nine Drama Desk Award nominations, winning three. Four Broadway cast albums featuring her performances have won Grammy Awards.
Peters is recognized for her interpretation of Stephen Sondheim's works and notable Broadway roles in musicals such as Mack and Mabel, Sunday in the Park with George, Song and Dance, Into the Woods, Annie Get Your Gun, and Gypsy. She began performing as a child and teenage actor in the 1960s and appeared in films and television in the 1970s, including The Muppet Show, The Carol Burnett Show, Silent Movie, The Jerk, Pennies from Heaven, and Annie. In the 1980s, she returned to theatre, becoming a prominent Broadway star for three decades. She has recorded six solo albums, several singles, and many cast albums, and continues to act on stage, in films, and on television, where she has earned three Emmy and three Golden Globe nominations, winning one Golden Globe.
