Billie Paul Piper (born Leian Paul Piper; 22 September 1982) is an English singer, dancer, and actress. She debuted in Scratchy & Co. (1995–1998) and, at age 15, signed a recording contract, releasing her debut single "Because We Want To," which debuted at number one in the UK, making her the youngest artist to do so. Her album Honey to the B (1998) was certified double platinum in New Zealand and platinum in the UK. She released her second album, Walk of Life, in 2000 and retired from music in 2003 to pursue acting.
Piper began acting in 2004 and is best known for playing Rose Tyler, companion to The Doctor, in the BBC series Doctor Who from 2005 to 2006, reprising the role in 2008, 2010, and 2013. From 2007 to 2011, she starred as Belle de Jour in Secret Diary of a Call Girl and played Brona Croft/Lily in the Showtime series Penny Dreadful. In 2007, Broadcast magazine ranked her sixth in its "Hot 100" list of influential on-screen performers, the highest-ranked woman on the list.
