Catherine Deneuve, born on 22 October 1943, is a French actress, occasional singer, model, and producer. She is known for portraying aloof, mysterious characters and became the official face of Marianne, France's national symbol of liberty, in 1985. Deneuve has been nominated 14 times for the César Award, winning for The Last Metro (1980) and Indochine (1992). She has supported various liberal causes.
Deneuve debuted in film in 1957 and gained prominence in The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964). She starred in Repulsion (1965), Belle de Jour (1967), and Tristana (1970). She received a BAFTA nomination for Belle de Jour and an Academy Award nomination for Indochine. She won the Volpi Cup in 1998 for Place Vendôme and the Silver Bear in 2002 for 8 Women. Her English-language films include The April Fools (1969), Hustle (1975), The Hunger (1983), and Dancer in the Dark (2000). In 2015, she appeared in The Brand New Testament and Standing Tall.
