Grace Jones (born 19 May 1948) is a Jamaican singer, songwriter, lyricist, supermodel, record producer, and actress. She was born in Spanish Town, Jamaica, and raised by her grandparents. At 13, she moved with her siblings to their parents' home in Syracuse, New York. Jones began her career as a model in New York and Paris, working for Yves St. Laurent, Claude Montana, and Kenzo Takada, and appeared on covers of Elle, Vogue, and Stern.
In 1977, Jones signed with Island Records and moved into dance, new wave, and reggae music, often collaborating with the Compass Point All Stars. She had UK Top 40 hits with "Pull Up to the Bumper," "I've Seen That Face Before," "Private Life," "Slave to the Rhythm," and "I'm Not Perfect." Her notable albums include Warm Leatherette (1980), Nightclubbing (1981), and Slave to the Rhythm (1985). Jones appeared in films such as Conan the Destroyer (1984), A View to a Kill (1985), Vamp (1986), Boomerang (1992), and Wolf Girl (2001). She received a Grammy nomination for One Man Show (1983) and Saturn Award nominations for her film roles. Jones was ranked 82nd on VH1's 100 Greatest Women of Rock and Roll in 1999 and received a Q Idol Award in 2008. She influenced the 1980s cross-dressing movement and inspired artists including Annie Lennox, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and Lorde.
Jamaica
