Greta Celeste Gerwig (born August 4, 1983) is an American actress, writer, and director. She gained recognition through mumblecore films, appearing in and collaborating on projects with Joe Swanberg between 2006 and 2009. Gerwig worked with Noah Baumbach on films such as Greenberg (2010), Frances Ha (2012), and Mistress America (2015). She starred in Damsels in Distress (2011), To Rome with Love (2012), Jackie (2016), and 20th Century Women (2016), receiving a Critics' Choice Movie Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for the latter.
Gerwig made her solo directorial debut with Lady Bird (2017), a comedy-drama that won Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy at the 75th Golden Globe Awards. She earned nominations for Golden Globe, BAFTA, and Writers Guild of America Awards for Best Screenplay, as well as a Directors Guild of America Award nomination for Best Director for Lady Bird.
