Greta Thunberg (born 3 January 2003) is a Swedish environmental activist recognized internationally for highlighting the existential threat posed by climate change. She began her activism in August 2018 by striking outside the Swedish parliament at age 15 to demand stronger climate action, inspiring a global movement known as Fridays for Future.
Thunberg gained prominence after addressing the 2018 United Nations Climate Change Conference and attending the 2019 UN Climate Action Summit, traveling by sailboat to avoid flying. She has been called a leader and a target of criticism, with her influence termed the "Greta effect." Her awards include an honorary Fellowship of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society, inclusion in Time's 100 most influential people and as the youngest Time Person of the Year, a spot on Forbes' 2019 list of The World's 100 Most Powerful Women, and Nobel Peace Prize nominations in 2019 and 2020.
