Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton (born October 26, 1947) is an American politician and diplomat who served as First Lady of the United States from 1993 to 2001, U.S. Senator from New York from 2001 to 2009, and the 67th U.S. Secretary of State from 2009 to 2013. She was the Democratic Party's nominee for President in the 2016 election.
Born in Chicago and raised in Park Ridge, Illinois, Clinton graduated from Wellesley College in 1969 and earned a Juris Doctor from Yale Law School in 1973. She married Bill Clinton in 1975 and co-founded Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families in 1977. She was the first female chair of the Legal Services Corporation in 1978 and the first female partner at Rose Law Firm in 1979. As First Lady of Arkansas, she led efforts to reform public schools.
As First Lady of the United States, Clinton advocated for gender equality and healthcare reform. She was elected as the first female Senator from New York in 2000 and reelected in 2006. In the 2008 presidential race, she won more delegates than any previous female candidate but lost the Democratic nomination to Barack Obama.
During her term as Secretary of State, Clinton supported military intervention in Libya following the Arab Spring and helped organize sanctions against Iran, contributing to the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. After leaving the Cabinet, she wrote her fifth book and gave speeches.
Clinton ran again for president in 2016, securing the most votes and delegates in the Democratic primaries and formally accepting the nomination on July 28, 2016, with running mate Tim Kaine. She was the first female major party presidential nominee but lost the election to Donald Trump despite winning the popular vote with over 65 million votes. After the election, she wrote her third memoir and founded Onward Together, a political action group supporting progressive causes.
