Jane Fonda (born Jayne Seymour Fonda; December 21, 1937) is an American actress, writer, political activist, former fashion model, and fitness instructor. She has won two Academy Awards and two BAFTA Awards. In 2014, she received the American Film Institute Life Achievement Award. Fonda made her Broadway debut in 1960 with There Was a Little Girl and her screen debut the same year in Tall Story. She gained fame in 1960s films including Period of Adjustment, Sunday in New York, Cat Ballou, Barefoot in the Park, and Barbarella. She was nominated for seven Academy Awards, winning Best Actress for Klute (1971) and Coming Home (1978). Other nominations include They Shoot Horses, Don't They?, Julia, The China Syndrome, On Golden Pond, and The Morning After. She also won an Emmy for The Dollmaker and four Golden Globe Awards.
In 1982, Fonda released Jane Fonda's Workout, the highest-selling exercise video of its time, beginning a series of 22 videos that sold over 17 million copies. She was married to Roger Vadim, Tom Hayden, and Ted Turner, retiring from acting after marrying Turner in 1991 and divorcing him in 2001. She returned to film in 2005 with Monster in Law and appeared in Georgia Rule, The Butler, This Is Where I Leave You, and Youth. Fonda returned to Broadway in 2009 with 33 Variations and earned a Tony nomination. She had a recurring role on HBO's The Newsroom and starred in the Netflix series Grace and Frankie starting in 2015. Fonda was active in political causes during the Vietnam War and has advocated for women's rights. She co-founded the Women's Media Center in 2005 and serves on its board. She published autobiographies in 2005 and 2011.
