Dame Joan Henrietta Collins, DBE (born 23 May 1933) is an English actress, author, and columnist. She was born in Paddington, west London, and raised in Maida Vale during the Second World War. Collins made her stage debut at age nine in A Doll's House and trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. She signed an exclusive contract with the Rank Organisation and appeared in various British films before moving to Hollywood at age 22.
In Hollywood, Collins appeared in films such as The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing (1955) and Rally Round the Flag, Boys! (1958). She guest-starred in the 1967 Star Trek episode "The City on the Edge of Forever" as Edith Keeler. Her career declined in the 1970s, during which she appeared in horror films and starred in softcore adaptations of novels by her sister Jackie Collins: The Stud (1978) and The Bitch (1979). She returned to the stage in the 1980s and gained widespread recognition as Alexis Carrington Colby in the television soap opera Dynasty, winning a Golden Globe Award in 1982. Collins also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1983. Since the late 1970s, she has published several books, including beauty guides, autobiographies, and novels, beginning with Prime Time in 1988.
