Joanna Pacitti was born on October 6, 1984, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Stella and Joseph Pacitti. At age 11, she was cast in the title role of the musical Annie for its 20th anniversary tour but was replaced due to illness after 106 performances before the Broadway run. In 1997, she performed with The Broadway Kids, a group of children aged 8 to 16 who had appeared in Broadway, Off-Broadway, or major touring productions. She appeared in The Secret Garden at the North Carolina Theater in 1999 and played Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz in 2001 and 2002.
At 16, Pacitti signed with A&M Records. In 2003, she appeared as herself in an episode of MTV's True Life. She played Amber in a 2005 episode of the series Hallo Holly. Her first single, "Let It Slide," was released in May 2006 by Geffen Records, followed by her debut album This Crazy Life on August 15, 2006. Her contract with Geffen Records ended in November 2007.
