Dame Julie Andrews (born 1 October 1935) is an English film and stage actress, singer, author, theatre director, and dancer. She appeared on the West End in 1948 and made her Broadway debut in The Boy Friend (1954). Andrews starred in Broadway musicals such as My Fair Lady (1956) and Camelot (1960), and in 1957, she starred in the television musical Cinderella, viewed by over 100 million people.
Andrews made her film debut in Mary Poppins (1964), winning the Academy Award for Best Actress. She starred in The Sound of Music (1965), winning a Golden Globe. Her other films include The Americanization of Emily (1964), Hawaii (1966), Torn Curtain (1966), Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967), Star! (1968), The Tamarind Seed (1974), 10 (1979), Victor Victoria (1982), That's Life! (1986), and Duet for One (1986). In 2000, she was made a Dame by Queen Elizabeth II. She directed a revival of The Boy Friend in 2003 and starred in The Princess Diaries films (2001, 2004). From 2004 to 2010, she voiced characters in the Shrek films and Despicable Me (2010). Andrews has won an Academy Award, BAFTA, five Golden Globes, three Grammys, two Emmys, and other honors. She is also an author and published her autobiography in 2008.
