Katja Kipping (born January 18, 1978, in Dresden) is a German politician of The Left. She has been a member of the German Bundestag since 2005 and has served as co-chair of The Left alongside Bernd Riexinger since 2012.
Before joining the Bundestag in 2005, Kipping was a member of the Saxony state parliament for the PDS and was part of its parliamentary executive from 2003. From the founding of The Left Party in 2007 until her election as chairwoman, she was also a deputy party chair. Kipping is associated with the Emancipatory Left, a faction positioned in the party's center, and is not aligned with either the reform-oriented or left-wing factions.
