Laverne Cox is an American actress and LGBT advocate known for her role as Sophia Burset on the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black. She was the first openly transgender person nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award in an acting category and the first transgender Emmy nominee since composer Angela Morley in 1990. In 2015, Cox won a Daytime Emmy Award as executive producer for Laverne Cox Presents: The T Word, becoming the first openly transgender woman to receive this award. In 2017, she became the first transgender person to play a transgender series regular on broadcast TV in CBS's Doubt.
Cox also appeared as a contestant on VH1's I Want to Work for Diddy and co-produced and co-hosted the VH1 makeover series TRANSform Me. In 2014, she received the Stephen F. Kolzak Award from GLAAD for her advocacy work. She was the first openly transgender person to appear on the cover of Time magazine in June 2014 and on the cover of Cosmopolitan magazine in February 2018 (South African edition). Additionally, she is the first openly transgender person to have a wax figure at Madame Tussauds.
