American rapper Kimberly Denise Jones, widely recognized as Lil' Kim, was born on July 11, 1974 or July 11, 1975. She hails from Brooklyn, New York, where she spent a significant portion of her teenage years living on the streets after being asked to leave home. During her adolescence, Jones began performing freestyle raps and drew inspiration from actress and singer Diana Ross as well as influential female hip-hop figures such as MC Lyte and The Lady of Rage. Her music career took off in 1995 when she performed for The Notorious B.I.G., leading to her involvement with his group Junior M.A.F.I.A., whose debut album Conspiracy produced two top 20 hits in the United States.

Lil' Kim's first studio album, Hard Core (1996), achieved double platinum status according to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and included three consecutive No. 1 rap singles: "No Time," "Not Tonight (Ladies Night remix)," and "Crush on You," setting a record for female rappers. Her subsequent albums, The Notorious K.I.M. (2000) and La Bella Mafia (2003), also received Platinum certifications, making her one of only two female rappers alongside Missy Elliott to have three platinum records. She collaborated on the track "Lady Marmalade" with artists Mýa, Pink, and Christina Aguilera—a reimagining of LaBelle's classic hit from 1975—which reached No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart; this achievement made her the second female rapper ever to top that chart following Lauryn Hill. Additionally, this remake won two MTV Video Music Awards including Video of the Year and a Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals at the 44th Grammy Awards in 2002. In 2005, she completed a year-long prison sentence after lying about her friends’ involvement in a shooting incident that occurred four years prior. While incarcerated, she released her fourth album titled The Naked Truth. In 2009, she re-entered public life through an appearance on Dancing with the Stars.

Throughout her professional journey, Jones has received numerous honors for her contributions to music. Her tracks "No Time," "Big Momma Thang," and "Ladies Night" were featured in Complex Magazine's list titled "The 50 Best Rap Songs By Women," ranked at numbers 24, 13, and seven respectively. Songs like "Crush On You," "It's All About the Benjamins," and "Money Power Respect" are included in VH1's compilation of “The 100 Greatest Hip-Hop Songs.” In recognition of her impact within music culture, Lil' Kim was listed at number 45 on VH1’s “100 Greatest Women In Music,” marking one of the highest placements for a solo female hip-hop artist.
