Naomi Osaka, born October 16, 1997, is a professional tennis player representing Japan. She is the current US Open and Australian Open women's singles champion and achieved the No. 1 ranking in the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) in January 2019.
Born in Japan to a Haitian father and Japanese mother, Osaka has lived in the United States since age three. She gained attention at sixteen by defeating former US Open champion Samantha Stosur in her WTA Tour debut at the 2014 Stanford Classic. She reached her first WTA final in 2016 and won her first WTA title in 2018 at the Indian Wells Open. In 2018, she became the first Japanese player to win a Grand Slam singles tournament by winning the US Open, and in 2019 she became the first Asian player to be ranked world No. 1 after winning the Australian Open. Osaka is known for her aggressive playing style with a powerful serve and a shy, candid personality off the court.
