Simona Halep, born 27 September 1991, is a Romanian professional tennis player and current world No. 1 on the WTA Tour, a ranking she first achieved in October 2017. She entered the top 50 at the end of 2012, reached the top 20 in August 2013, and the top 10 in January 2014. In 2013, she won her first six WTA titles and was named the WTA's Most Improved Player and ESPN Center Court's Most Improved Player.
Halep won her first major tournament at the 2018 French Open, having previously been a finalist at the 2014 and 2017 French Opens and the 2018 Australian Open. She reached the 2014 WTA Finals final, losing to Serena Williams after defeating her earlier in the event. Halep won three titles in both the 2015 and 2016 seasons, including two Premier Mandatory titles, and remained in the top 10. She was the most clicked player on WTATennis.com in 2014 and 2015 and received the WTA Most Popular Player of the Year award. After the 2017 Wimbledon Championships, she became the active player with the most consecutive weeks in the top 10 and won WTA's Fan Favorite Singles Player in 2017. In 2018, she was awarded the title of Honorary Citizen of Bucharest.
