Sônia Maria Campos Braga, born on June 8, 1950, in Maringá, Paraná, is a Brazilian actress. She gained recognition in Brazil with the 1975 telenovela adaptation of Jorge Amado's novel "Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon," which was very popular. She is considered one of Brazil's greatest actresses since Carmen Miranda and a prominent sex symbol of her generation.
Braga began her career at 14 on Rede Globo television, performed in the musical Hair at 17, and appeared in her first film at 19. In 1972, she became known to children as the teacher Ana Maria on Vila Sésamo (the Brazilian Sesame Street). She gained international attention through films such as Kiss of the Spider Woman and Milagro – The War in Beans. Braga had a relationship with Robert Redford. In 2001, she appeared in the TV series Sex and the City as Maria and had guest roles in Alias and Brothers & Sisters. Her niece Alice Braga is also an actress.
