The Miss Universe pageant, organized by the Miss Universe Organization, was established in 1952 by Pacific Knitting Mills. Its headquarters are located in New York City. Since 2015, Fox and Azteca have served as the official broadcasters of the pageant. Donald Trump acquired the pageant in 1996 and sold his shares in 2015 to William Morris Endeavor Entertainment LLC.

Broadcast annually in over 190 countries, the pageant attracts more than 500 million viewers worldwide. The most recent American winner was Olivia Culpo in 2012. Since the pageant’s inception, only one titleholder, Marlene Schmidt, who won in 1961, was born in Germany.
