Amanda Marie Knox (born July 9, 1987) is an American woman who spent nearly four years in an Italian prison following her conviction for the 2007 murder of Meredith Kercher, a fellow exchange student and flatmate. In 2015, Knox was definitively acquitted by Italy's Supreme Court of Cassation.
At age 20, Knox called the police after returning to the flat she shared with Kercher and finding Kercher's bedroom door locked and blood in the bathroom. During an interrogation, Knox implicated herself and her employer, Patrick Lumumba. Knox and her boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, were initially accused of murdering Kercher with Lumumba, who was soon released. Rudy Guede, a known burglar, was later arrested after his bloodstained fingerprints were found on Kercher's belongings. Knox's initial conviction and 26-year sentence sparked international controversy due to disputed forensic evidence. After a prolonged legal process, including appeals, Knox and Sollecito were definitively exonerated in 2015. Knox's conviction for calunnia (calumny) against Lumumba was upheld, but she was acquitted of calunnia related to claims of police violence during interrogation in 2016.
