American comedian Ellen DeGeneres (born January 26, 1958) is also a television host, actress, writer, and producer. She gained fame for her role in the sitcom Ellen from 1994 to 1998 and has been the host of her own syndicated talk show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, since its launch in 2003.

DeGeneres initiated her stand-up career during the early 1980s and achieved recognition with a performance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson in 1986. Following her set, Carson invited her for an interview segment; she was the first woman comedian to receive such an invitation from him at that time, which was considered a significant endorsement for comedians. In film, she appeared in Mr. Wrong (1996), EDtv (1999), and The Love Letter (1999), as well as lending her voice to Dory in Pixar's animated features Finding Nemo (2003) and Finding Dory (2016). For her role in Finding Nemo, she received the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress—marking the first instance of an actress winning this award for vocal performance. Additionally, she served as a judge on American Idol during its ninth season in 2010.

DeGeneres featured in two sitcoms: Ellen from 1994 to 1998 and The Ellen Show from 2001 to 2002. During the fourth season of Ellen in 1997, she publicly came out as a lesbian while appearing on The Oprah Winfrey Show. Shortly after this revelation, her character Ellen Morgan also disclosed her sexual orientation to Winfrey’s therapist character; this narrative explored various LGBT themes including coming-out experiences. This made DeGeneres the first openly lesbian actress portraying an openly lesbian character on television. In 2008, she entered into marriage with Portia de Rossi.

She has hosted several prestigious events including the Academy Awards, Grammy Awards, and Primetime Emmys. As an author of three books and founder of a record label named Eleveneleven, DeGeneres has accumulated numerous accolades throughout her career—29 Emmys among them—and holds more People's Choice Awards than any other individual with a total of 20 wins along with many additional honors recognizing both her professional achievements and philanthropic contributions. In recognition of her work in social advocacy initiatives alongside entertainment excellence, President Barack Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016.
