American swimmer and actress Esther Jane Williams (August 8, 1921 – June 6, 2013) was known for her contributions to both sports and film.

In her late teens, Williams established numerous national and regional swimming records while competing with the Los Angeles Athletic Club swim team. Due to the onset of World War II, she missed the opportunity to participate in the 1940 Summer Olympics and instead joined Billy Rose's Aquacade. There, she took over a role previously held by Eleanor Holm after relocating from New York City to San Francisco. During her time in San Francisco, she trained alongside Olympic champion Johnny Weissmuller for five months. While performing at the Aquacade, MGM talent scouts noticed Williams. After landing several minor roles—including one with Mickey Rooney in an Andy Hardy film and another with future co-star Van Johnson in A Guy Named Joe—she starred in a series of "aquamusicals" during the 1940s and early 1950s that featured intricate synchronized swimming routines.

Between 1945 and 1949, at least one of Williams' films ranked among the top twenty highest-grossing films each year. In 1952, she portrayed Australian swimmer Annette Kellerman in Million Dollar Mermaid—her only biographical role—which led to her being nicknamed after this character during her tenure at MGM. After departing from MGM in 1956, she appeared in several less successful feature films but later gained popularity through various water-themed television specials produced from Cypress Gardens, Florida.

In addition to her acting career, Williams was an accomplished entrepreneur. Prior to retiring from acting, she made investments that included a service station, a metal products factory, a swimsuit manufacturing company, various real estate holdings, and a restaurant chain called Trails. She also lent her name to a line of swimming pools as well as retro swimwear collections; additionally served as an instructor for children’s swimming videos; and provided commentary on synchronized swimming events during the Los Angeles Summer Olympics in 1984.
