British politician Mary Elizabeth Truss (born 26 July 1975) serves as the current prime minister of the United Kingdom and heads the Conservative Party. She has held multiple Cabinet positions under former prime ministers David Cameron, Theresa May, and Boris Johnson, most recently acting as foreign secretary from 2021 to 2022. Truss has represented South West Norfolk as a Member of Parliament (MP) since 2010.

Truss studied at Merton College, Oxford, where she presided over the Oxford University Liberal Democrats. In 1996, she became a member of the Conservative Party. Her professional background includes roles at Shell and Cable & Wireless, along with serving as deputy director for the think tank Reform. After two unsuccessful bids for a seat in the House of Commons, she won election to represent South West Norfolk during the general election in 2010. As a backbencher, she advocated for changes in various policy areas such as childcare services, mathematics education reform, and economic strategies. She established the Free Enterprise Group among Conservative MPs and authored or co-authored several publications including After the Coalition (2011) and Britannia Unchained (2012).

Truss was appointed parliamentary under-secretary of state for childcare and education from 2012 until 2014 when Cameron designated her secretary of state for environment, food and rural affairs during a cabinet reshuffle that year. Although initially backing the Britain Stronger in Europe campaign advocating for continued EU membership by the UK, she shifted her stance to support Brexit following the outcome of the 2016 referendum. After Cameron's resignation in July 2016, May appointed Truss secretary of state for justice and lord chancellor—making her history’s first female officeholder in this role lasting nearly one thousand years. Following elections in June 2017, Truss took on responsibilities as chief secretary to the Treasury.

After May stepped down from leadership duties in 2019, Truss endorsed Johnson’s successful candidacy for leader of their party and subsequently received an appointment as secretary of state for international trade alongside presidency over Board of Trade affairs. In September that same year, she also assumed additional responsibilities regarding women’s rights and equality issues. Elevated to foreign secretary by Johnson during his cabinet reshuffle in 2021; she became chief negotiator with respect to European Union matters while chairing sessions related to EU–UK Partnership Council starting December that year—she played an active part concerning Britain's response toward Russia's invasion into Ukraine beginning February 2022. Following Johnson's departure amid governmental turmoil later that year; Truss emerged victorious within Conservative Party leadership elections becoming prime minister amidst rising living costs coupled with energy supply challenges facing households across England; implementing policies such as an Energy Price Guarantee designed around capping energy expenses affecting both public sectors plus businesses alongside announcing extensive borrowing plans tied together through tax reductions outlined within an initial budget proposal which encountered mixed reactions leading toward substantial reversals.
