American singer, rapper, songwriter, actress, and flutist Melissa Viviane Jefferson, professionally recognized as Lizzo, was born on April 27, 1988. Originally from Detroit, Michigan, she relocated to Houston, Texas to start her performances before moving on to Minneapolis for her recording endeavors. Prior to her signing with Nice Life and Atlantic Records, Lizzo launched two studio albums: Lizzobangers (2013) and Big Grrrl Small World (2015). Her debut major-label EP titled Coconut Oil was released in 2016.

Lizzo rose to mainstream prominence with the launch of her third studio album Cuz I Love You (2019), which reached the top five of the US Billboard 200 chart. This album featured two singles: "Juice" and "Tempo". The deluxe edition also included her earlier single "Truth Hurts" from 2017 that became a viral sensation and topped the US Billboard Hot 100 two years post its original release. Additionally, her single "Good as Hell," released in 2016, gained traction by reaching the top ten in both the UK Singles Chart and the Hot 100. At the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards, she received eight nominations—more than any other artist that year—including Album of the Year for Cuz I Love You's deluxe version and Song of the Year along with Record of the Year for "Truth Hurts", alongside Best New Artist honors. Ultimately, Lizzo secured victories for Best Urban Contemporary Album and Best Pop Solo Performance for “Truth Hurts”, as well as Best Traditional R&B Performance for “Jerome”.

In addition to her music career, Lizzo has ventured into acting; she provided voice work in the animated feature UglyDolls (2019) and appeared in Hustlers (2019), a crime comedy-drama film. In recognition of her rapid ascent within the industry and contributions to music in 2019, Time designated Lizzo as "Entertainer of the Year".
