Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor (born 7 November 1996), known professionally as Lorde, is a New Zealand singer-songwriter. She is known for her electropop music with elements of dream pop and indie-electro, and introspective songwriting. Born in Auckland, she signed with Universal Music Group in 2009 and began recording with producer Joel Little in 2011. Their first collaborative release, the EP The Love Club, was initially self-released in 2012 and commercially released in 2013, featuring the international hit single "Royals."
Lorde's debut studio album Pure Heroine was released in 2013 to critical and commercial success. She curated the soundtrack for the 2014 film The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, including the single "Yellow Flicker Beat." Her second album Melodrama (2017) debuted atop the US Billboard 200 and received critical acclaim. Lorde has won two Grammy Awards, two Brit Awards, and received a Golden Globe nomination. She appeared in Time's most influential teenagers list in 2013 and 2014, Forbes 30 Under 30 in 2014, and has co-written songs for other artists. As of June 2017, she sold over five million albums worldwide.
