Melanie Jayne Chisholm (born 12 January 1974), known as Melanie C or Mel C, is an English singer, songwriter, actress, and television personality. She was a member of the Spice Girls, nicknamed Sporty Spice, and sold over 100 million records worldwide with the group. Melanie C began her solo career in 1998 with the song "When You're Gone" alongside Bryan Adams. Her debut solo album Northern Star was released in 1999, reaching number four on the UK Albums Chart and earning triple Platinum certification by the British Phonographic Industry. It produced four top-five singles and two number-one singles in the UK. Her second album, Reason, was released in March 2003, sold over 500,000 copies, reached number five in the UK, and included singles charting in the top ten, top twenty, and top thirty.
In 2004, Melanie C left Virgin Records and founded Red Girl Records. Her third album, Beautiful Intentions, released in April 2005, reached number twenty-four in the UK and number fifteen in Germany. It produced three singles, including one that reached number ten in the UK and another that topped charts in Europe. Her fourth album, This Time, was released in April 2007, charting at fifty-seven in the UK, with singles reaching number one in parts of Europe and entering the top thirty in the UK. In December 2007, she reunited with the Spice Girls for a world tour and a greatest hits album. She released her fifth album, The Sea, on 2 September 2011, the EP The Night on 13 May 2012, and her sixth album, Stages, on 10 September 2012. Since 1999, she has sold more than 12 million solo records.
