Michelle LaVaughn Robinson Obama (born January 17, 1964) is an American lawyer, writer, and former First Lady of the United States. She is married to the 44th President, Barack Obama, and was the first African-American First Lady. Raised in Chicago, Illinois, she graduated from Princeton University and Harvard Law School. She worked at the law firm Sidley Austin, where she met her husband, and later held positions at the University of Chicago and its Medical Center. Barack and Michelle married in 1992 and have two daughters.
Obama campaigned for her husband's presidential bids in 2007 and 2008, delivering a keynote address at the 2008 Democratic National Convention. She spoke again at the 2012 and 2016 Democratic National Conventions, supporting Democratic nominees including Hillary Clinton. As First Lady, she became known as a fashion icon, a role model for women, and an advocate for poverty awareness, nutrition, physical activity, and healthy eating.
