The Pussycat Dolls were an American female musical group and dance ensemble, established in Los Angeles, California, by choreographer Robin Antin in 1995 as a burlesque performance act. After gaining media interest, Antin secured a recording contract with Interscope Geffen A&M Records in 2003, evolving the group into a music entity that included Nicole Scherzinger, Carmit Bachar, Ashley Roberts, Jessica Sutta, Melody Thornton, and Kimberly Wyatt. Guided by Antin along with Interscope and various collaborators, the collective was developed into an international brand and commercial identity. The Pussycat Dolls achieved mainstream visibility following the launch of their album PCD, featuring chart-topping hits such as "Don't Cha," "Buttons," and "Stickwitu." In 2009, they declared a temporary hiatus that later became known as an official disbandment. The Dolls brand expanded into merchandise sales, reality TV shows, performances in Las Vegas, sponsorship deals, offshoot recording groups (Girlicious, Paradiso Girls, G.R.L.), among other projects. Billboard positioned the Pussycat Dolls as the 80th most successful musical act of the 2000s. The group has achieved global record sales of 54 million units making them one of history's top-selling girl groups. In 2012, The Pussycat Dolls were ranked 100th on VH1's list of 100 Greatest Women in Music and recognized as the tenth all-female group.
