Rae Dawn Chong is a Canadian-American actress known for diverse roles in film and television since the late 1970s. She made her film debut in the musical drama Stony Island (1978) and gained recognition for her role as Ika in the prehistoric epic Quest for Fire (1981) by Jean-Jacques Annaud, for which she received the Genie Award for Best Actress.
In the 1980s and early 1990s, Chong appeared in major studio films and cult classics, including Beat Street (1984), Choose Me (1984), American Flyers (1985), The Color Purple (1985), and Commando (1985) alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger. She also acted in Soul Man (1986), The Principal (1987), Tales from the Darkside: The Movie (1990), The Borrower (1991), Time Runner (1993), and Boulevard (1994). Born in Edmonton, Alberta, to actor and comedian Tommy Chong and editor Maxine Sneed, she has Chinese, Scottish-Irish, and Black Canadian heritage. Her sister Robbi Chong and adopted brother Marcus Chong are also actors. Her award-winning role in Quest for Fire required conveying a wide emotional range with minimal language, highlighting her strong screen presence.
