The inaugural issue featured Marilyn Monroe as the first cover model, showcasing sensual but non-nude photographs published on December 1, 1953. Notably, Pamela Anderson holds the record for the most nude appearances as a Playmate.
The magazine gained fame for publishing celebrity nude pictorials, along with its monthly "Playmate of the Month" feature, showcasing unknown models selected through submissions. Annually, readers vote for a "Playmate of the Year," who receives an additional nude photoshoot.
In late 2015, Playboy attempted to eliminate nude content, ironically aligning with feminist demands. However, this policy was reversed little more than a year later when the magazine reinstated nudity. Published in over 30 countries and multiple languages, Playboy's international editions, including the popular German version, each feature local celebrities posing nude for regional "Celebrity of the Month" spreads.
On September 27, 2017, Hugh Hefner—the founder and face of Playboy—passed away in Los Angeles at age 81. The brand continues under the leadership of Ben Kohn, current CEO of Playboy Enterprises, Inc.
