American singer, dancer, actress, and model Aaliyah Dana Haughton (January 16, 1979 – August 25, 2001) was born in Brooklyn, New York, and grew up in Detroit, Michigan. At just 10 years old, she took the stage on the TV program Star Search and performed alongside Gladys Knight at concerts. By age 12, Aaliyah entered into a recording agreement with Jive Records as well as her uncle Barry Hankerson's Blackground Records. Under Hankerson's guidance, she collaborated with R. Kelly who played a crucial role as her mentor along with being the primary songwriter and producer for her debut album titled Age Ain't Nothing but a Number. This album achieved sales of three million copies in the U.S., receiving double platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Following controversies surrounding an unlawful marriage to R. Kelly, Aaliyah terminated her contract with Jive Records to join Atlantic Records.
For her sophomore project One in a Million, Aaliyah teamed up with producers Timbaland and Missy Elliott; this album sold three million copies within the United States alone and over eight million globally. In the year 2000, she made her film debut in Romeo Must Die while also contributing to its soundtrack which featured the hit single "Try Again". The track reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 primarily through airplay alone—marking Aaliyah as the first artist ever to achieve such success according to Billboard statistics. "Try Again" garnered a Grammy nomination for Best Female R&B Vocalist for Aaliyah. After wrapping up work on Romeo Must Die, she went on to shoot scenes for Queen of the Damned before releasing her third album titled Aaliyah in July 2001.
On August 25th of that year, Aaliyah lost her life along with eight others when their plane crashed in the Bahamas after filming a music video for "Rock the Boat." The pilot involved was found unlicensed during this tragic incident and had substances like cocaine and alcohol present in his system at that time. Subsequently, Aaliyah’s family pursued legal action against Blackhawk International Airways concerning wrongful death claims which were eventually resolved out of court. Posthumously released music by Aaliyah has continued to perform well commercially; estimates suggest she has sold between 24 million to over 32 million albums worldwide. Her influence is recognized for reshaping contemporary R&B alongside pop and hip hop genres earning titles such as "Princess of R&B" and "Queen of Urban Pop." Billboard ranks her among its top female R&B artists over recent decades.
