Canadian singer-songwriter Alannah Myles (born December 25, 1958) is the daughter of William Douglas Byles (1914–1988), a pioneer in Canadian broadcasting who was honored with induction into the Canadian Association of Broadcasters' Hall of Fame in 1997.
At the age of 19, she adopted her surname Myles as she aimed to enter the entertainment industry. Her roles in television advertisements funded music demos that faced numerous rejections within Canada until she recorded masters for three tracks; "Who Loves You" and a video demo for "Just One Kiss," which was directed by photographer Deborah Samuel. With support from songwriting partner Christopher Ward, who was also a DJ and program director at Much Music (City TV), along with FACTOR funding, she secured her first recording contract with Atlantic Records in 1987.
In late 1987, Bob Roper, Warner Music Canada's A&R director, distributed a three-song video package to all affiliates of Warner Music Group across the U.S., leading to an unexpected seven-year contract from Atlantic Records signed by head A&R Tunc Erim and Atlantic founder Ahmet Ertegun. Myles stepped away from a profitable acting career to co-write and record additional tracks for her debut album alongside collaborator Christopher Ward and producer David Tyson. In 1989, Atlantic Records launched her self-titled debut album while Myles undertook an international tour lasting 18 months. This initial album received the Diamond Award after exceeding one million units sold; it marks her as the only Canadian debut artist to achieve this recognition. Reports indicate that sales reached over six million copies globally, establishing it as a classic-selling record.
Myles' self-titled debut produced top ten singles worldwide starting with "Love Is," followed by "Still Got This Thing For You." The single that achieved number one status in Canada during 1990 was "Lover of Mine." Her fourth American single released in 1990, "Black Velvet," topped the U.S. Billboard Top 40 Chart for two weeks and became an enduring radio classic internationally. It also earned her a Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance in 1990.
In 1992, Myles received another Grammy nomination for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance due to the title track "Rockinghorse," which accompanied lead-off single "Song Instead of a Kiss" from her second CD titled Rockinghorse. The ballad “Song Instead Of A Kiss,” featuring orchestration by sixty musicians, climbed to number one on various radio stations worldwide but did not resonate strongly within America’s market where audiences preferred “that slow southern style” akin to Black Velvet.
