Alison Maria Krauss (born July 23, 1971) is an American bluegrass-country singer and musician. She began her music career early, winning local contests by age ten and recording at fourteen. She signed with Rounder Records in 1985 and released her first solo album in 1987. Krauss joined the band Alison Krauss and Union Station, releasing their first group album in 1989.
She has released fourteen albums, appeared on numerous soundtracks, and contributed to renewed interest in bluegrass music in the United States. Notable soundtrack contributions include O Brother, Where Art Thou? and Cold Mountain, leading to her performance at the 2004 Academy Awards. As of 2012, Krauss has won 27 Grammy Awards from 41 nominations, making her the most awarded female artist and singer in Grammy history, tied with Quincy Jones as the most awarded living recipient and second only to Georg Solti with 31 wins.
