American actress and director Angela Evelyn Bassett, MFA, (born August 16, 1958) is recognized for her performances in biographical films, particularly her Academy Award-nominated role as Tina Turner in the movie What's Love Got to Do with It. Additionally, she has acted as Betty Shabazz in Malcolm X and Panther, Rosa Parks in The Rosa Parks Story, Coretta Scott King in Betty and Coretta, Katherine Jackson in The Jacksons: An American Dream, and Voletta Wallace in Notorious.

Bassett commenced her film journey during the mid-1980s following her graduation from Yale University’s drama program. She experienced a lack of consistent roles until the 1990s when she began appearing in films annually. The 2000s featured a stream of movies with Bassett taking part every year without exception. Her career continued to thrive into the 2010s where she received nominations for performances in works such as The Score (2001), Akeelah and the Bee (2006), Meet the Browns (2008), and Jumping the Broom (2011). She also won accolades for roles in How Stella Got Her Groove Back (1998) and Music of the Heart (1999) among others.

In 2013, she played a recurring character on FX's horror series American Horror Story: Coven and earned a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie for her portrayal of Voodoo queen Marie Laveau. She reprised her role for Freak Show, which was the fourth season of this anthology series; there she played Desiree Dupree, a character noted for having three breasts that led to another nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress. In 2015, Bassett appeared again on American Horror Story: Hotel portraying Ramona Royale—a celebrated film star—and confirmed her return for its sixth season set to air in 2016.
