She is recognized for co-creating and portraying both the main female and male roles in the movie Liquid Sky. Additionally, she had a supporting role as "Victoria" in Susan Seidelman's 1985 film Desperately Seeking Susan, played the character "Gwendoline" in Crocodile Dundee, and appeared in an episode of the television series Miami Vice. Carlisle further adapted her cult classic new wave film Liquid Sky into a novel.
