British-American actress Elizabeth Taylor (February 27, 1932 – March 23, 2011) was also a businesswoman and humanitarian. She started her professional work as a child actor in the early 1940s and became one of the most celebrated figures of classic Hollywood cinema during the 1950s. Taylor successfully continued her career into the 1960s and remained a widely recognized public figure throughout her lifetime. In 1999, she was ranked as the seventh greatest female screen legend by the American Film Institute.

Born in London to affluent American parents with social standing, Taylor relocated with her family to Los Angeles in 1939, where she soon received a film contract from Universal Pictures. Her film debut occurred in a minor part in There's One Born Every Minute (1942), but Universal ended her contract after one year.
