Ellen Burstyn (born Edna Rae Gillooly on December 7, 1932) is an American actress who began her career in theatre in the late 1950s. She received her first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for The Last Picture Show (1971), then transitioned to leading roles. She earned a second Academy Award nomination for The Exorcist (1973) and won the Academy Award for Best Actress for Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974).
Burstyn won the Tony Award in 1975 for Same Time, Next Year and received a Golden Globe Award and a fourth Academy Award nomination for the 1978 film adaptation. She has received multiple awards including seven additional Golden Globe nominations, five Emmy nominations with two wins, and two more Academy Award nominations for Resurrection (1980) and Requiem for a Dream (2000). She is one of the few actors to have won the Triple Crown of Acting and was inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame in 2013.
