Elena Ethel "Elly" Schlein, born on May 4, 1985, in Lugano, is an Italian-Swiss-American politician. She graduated in law from the University of Bologna in 2011 and participated in Barack Obama's election campaigns in 2008 and 2012.
From 2014 to 2019, Schlein was a member of the European Parliament, focusing on migration, equality, and anti-corruption. In 2020, she became vice president of the Emilia-Romagna region after receiving a record number of personal votes. She joined the Italian Chamber of Deputies in 2022. On March 12, 2023, Schlein was elected chairwoman of the Democratic Party, becoming the first woman, youngest person, and first openly LGBTQ+ politician to hold this position.
