German singer-songwriter Gabriele Susanne Kerner, commonly known as Nena, was born on March 24, 1960. She gained global attention in 1983 with her hit track "99 Luftballons," associated with the New German Wave movement. In 1984, she produced an English version titled "99 Red Balloons." The song was released under the name of her band, also called Nena. A revival of several of her earlier tracks helped to restart her career in 2002. In 2007, she became a co-founder of Neue Schule Hamburg.
