Austrian and American film actress and inventor Hedy Lamarr (born Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler, 9 November 1913 – 19 January 2000) was a prominent figure in the entertainment industry.

Following a brief initial career in German cinema, which featured the provocative film Ecstasy (1933), she escaped from her marriage to a wealthy Austrian arms manufacturer and discreetly relocated to Paris. There, she encountered MGM executive Louis B. Mayer, who proposed a film contract that launched her stardom in Hollywood from the late 1930s through the 1950s.

Lamarr's extensive filmography includes several well-received movies such as Algiers (1938), I Take This Woman (1940), Comrade X (1940), Come Live With Me (1941), H.M. Pulham, Esq. (1941), and Samson and Delilah. Director Max Reinhardt referred to her as "the most beautiful woman in Europe," while Woody Allen remarked on her striking presence.

At the onset of World War II, Lamarr collaborated with composer George Antheil to create a radio control system for Allied torpedoes that employed spread spectrum and frequency hopping techniques to counteract jamming efforts by Axis forces. Although adopted by the US Navy only in the 1960s, their innovative concepts are now integral to modern technologies like GPS, Wi-Fi, CDMA, and Bluetooth; this achievement led to their induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014.
