American politician and diplomat Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton (born October 26, 1947) held the position of First Lady of the United States from 1993 to 2001, served as a U.S. Senator representing New York from 2001 to 2009, was the 67th Secretary of State for the United States from 2009 to 2013, and was the Democratic Party's candidate for President in the election of 2016.

Clinton originated in Chicago, Illinois, and grew up in Park Ridge, a suburb of Chicago. She completed her undergraduate studies at Wellesley College in 1969 and obtained her Juris Doctor degree from Yale Law School in 1973. Following her work as legal counsel for Congress, she relocated to Arkansas where she married Bill Clinton in 1975. In that same year, she co-established Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families. She became the first woman to chair the Legal Services Corporation in 1978 and joined Rose Law Firm as its first female partner a year later. While serving as First Lady of Arkansas, she led an initiative aimed at reforming public education within the state.

During her time as First Lady on a national level, Clinton focused on issues related to gender equality and healthcare reform. Her marriage faced public scrutiny due to the Lewinsky scandal which prompted her to publicly affirm her dedication to it. In the year 2000, she was elected as New York's inaugural female Senator and successfully secured reelection in 2006. Although she garnered more delegates than any prior female candidate during her presidential campaign in 2008, she did not win the Democratic nomination against Barack Obama.

As Secretary of State under President Obama from 2009 until early 2013, Clinton addressed challenges arising from events known as the Arab Spring by supporting military action in Libya. She played a key role in organizing diplomatic efforts along with sanctions against Iran aimed at limiting its nuclear ambitions; this effort culminated in what became known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action agreement reached in mid-2015.
