American singer Janis Lyn Joplin (January 19, 1943 – October 4, 1970) is regarded as a leading female blues vocalist of the 1960s; her intense and expressive singing technique, coupled with her turbulent lifestyle, established her as one of the prominent female artists during her era. She passed away from a drug overdose in 1970 at the age of 27 after producing three studio albums. A posthumous album titled Pearl was issued just over three months following her death.

Joplin gained recognition in 1967 when she performed at the Monterey Pop Festival as the frontwoman for Big Brother and the Holding Company, a then-obscure San Francisco psychedelic rock group. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995, Joplin was widely recognized for her live performance skills. Both fans and critics described her stage presence as captivating. Rolling Stone listed Joplin as number 46 on its compilation of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time in 2004 and ranked her number 28 among its list of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time in 2008. She continues to be one of America's best-selling music artists with certifications from the Recording Industry Association of America indicating sales exceeding 15.5 million albums within the United States.
