American singer, actress, and spokesperson Jennifer Kate Hudson (born September 12, 1981) gained attention in 2004 as a contestant on the third season of American Idol, finishing in seventh place.

In her acting career, she debuted in film as Effie White in Dreamgirls (2006), where she received widespread recognition and was awarded the Academy Award, Golden Globe Award, BAFTA Award, and Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Supporting Actress. Her film credits also include appearances in Sex and the City (2008), The Secret Life of Bees (2008), and Black Nativity (2013). Additionally, she has made various television guest appearances on NBC's musical series Smash, Fox’s Empire, and Comedy Central's Inside Amy Schumer. In 2015, she took to Broadway for the first time as Shug Avery in the revival of The Color Purple.

As a recording artist, Hudson has produced three studio albums. Her debut album Jennifer Hudson was released in 2008; it entered at number two on the Billboard 200 chart and achieved gold certification from RIAA with over one million copies sold globally. This album garnered four Grammy nominations and won the Grammy for Best R&B Album in 2009. Her second release I Remember Me followed in 2011, also debuting at number two on Billboard 200 with gold certification by RIAA. Her latest album JHUD reached top ten status featuring the Grammy-nominated song "It's Your World".

Following a personal tragedy involving her mother, brother, and nephew's deaths due to gun violence in October 2008, Hudson withdrew from public events for three months. She returned to public life in 2009 with notable performances during Super Bowl XLIII celebrations along with appearances at the Grammy Awards and American Idol finale as well as The Oprah Winfrey Show. Hudson is known to have a friendship with President Barack Obama; he invited her to participate alongside him at a fundraiser held in Beverly Hills during May 2009. She performed at an event celebrating music from the Civil Rights Movement at The White House as well. In recognition of her contributions to entertainment industry achievements, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2013.
