American actress Joan Crawford, born Lucille Fay LeSueur on March 23, circa 1904, and passing on May 10, 1977, began her career as a dancer and stage performer. In 1999, the American Film Institute placed Crawford tenth among the greatest female stars of Classic Hollywood Cinema.

Crawford commenced her professional journey in dance with touring theater troupes before making her Broadway debut as a chorus girl. She signed with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1925 to pursue film opportunities. During the 1930s, Crawford's popularity matched that of MGM contemporaries Norma Shearer and Greta Garbo; she often portrayed ambitious young women who achieved love and success. These narratives resonated with audiences during the Great Depression and particularly appealed to female viewers. As one of Hollywood's leading actresses and among the highest-earning women in America at that time, she faced challenges when her films started underperforming financially; by the late 1930s, she was labeled "Box Office Poison." However, her fortunes improved in the early 1940s culminating in a significant resurgence following her role in Mildred Pierce (1945), which earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress. She subsequently received nominations for Best Actress for Possessed (1947) and Sudden Fear (1952).

In 1955, through her marriage to Pepsi-Cola Chairman Alfred Steele, she became associated with the company. Following Steele's passing in 1959, Crawford was appointed to his position on the board but faced mandatory retirement in 1973. Throughout the 1960s, she maintained a presence in film and television until fewer roles came her way; after starring in Trog (1970), she stepped back from acting entirely. After an appearance in public during 1974 led to unflattering media coverage about her appearance, Crawford retreated from public life becoming increasingly withdrawn until her death.

Crawford had four marriages; three ended via divorce while one concluded upon Steele’s death. She adopted five children though one was returned to their biological mother later on. Her relationships with two of those children—Christina and Christopher—were strained; both were disinherited by Crawford who later had a biography published posthumously by Christina titled Mommie Dearest.
